How much is ” A Handful”? I was chatting with a friend of mine the other day in relation to portion control with meals… The thing is the words… ” A Handful ” is very subjective! This is due to your parents’ conditioning, upbringing and also how big your meal portions were as a child. When clients tell me… ” I just handful of almonds”. Well… Your definition of a handful may be very different to mine. Did you eat 10 almonds or 30 almonds? “Oh, it’s just a handful, that’s nothing”! Well, let’s just see about that… 10 Almonds = 70 calories 30 Almonds = 210 calories A significant difference between the two! Now if you were to ask me what I handful is. I would relate it to when you’re at the movies and the popcorn is in the middle… You reach over to grab it and you dig your hand in the popcorn and fill a fist up with as much popcorn as you can Don’t judge me! I come from an ethnic background where showing an abundance of food is how we show respect and love to another. (I’m half Syrian, half Italian, so I get the best of both worlds) This is exactly why not just my clients but even myself need to make sure I am lodging a food diary every day to ensure I’m not over-eating and misjudging ” a handful”. |
